Gold-plated ornaments stolen from Triplicane(

A burglar struck at the 100-year-old Pandurangan temple in Triplicane and escaped with the gold-plated ornaments that adorned the some

of the deities. The thief attempted to steal the main hundi offerings but could not, only managing to break one of its locks.

Neighbours and local residents were shocked when they learnt about the theft. When police were informed, they rushed to the scene and inspected the temple premises. Fingerprint experts and forensic department officials arrived.

According to police, the burglar sneaked into the temple after breaking open the back-door lock and escaped once he could not break the hundi locks. Police added that the accused might have visited the temple as an ordinary devotee to find out possible hideouts inside and also to note the amount of money deposited in the hundi.

The temple is maintained by the Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowment Trust and executive officer A Kumaresan was appointed to look after its administration. According to sources, the century-old temple with sculptures of several deities, including Vishnu's, is located in the middle of a residential area in two grounds of space. Devotees often visited the temple during weekends when temple authorities organised religious lectures. Special prayers would then be offered to the deities.

The theft came to light on Tuesday morning when temple officials noticed the hundi and the door lock broken open. The hundi was intact, but the burglar attempted to steal the offerings from the public. However, he escaped with a few gold-plated jewels that adorned the deities," said Kumaresan.

Based on Kumaresan's complaint, police have registered a case and launched a hunt for the culprit. Further investigation is on.

CMDA demolishes parts of Triplicane building

CHENNAI June 21. The CMDA today demolished parts of a building in Triplicane that had three floors more than permitted. The demolition was the third building to go under the agency's ``wrecking ball'' since it began its drive this week to pull down illegal constructions and draw more people to its regularisation scheme. CMDA authorities said the building on the Triplicane High Road had approval only for a three-storey structure. But the promoter had constructed six floors ignoring stop-work and demolition notices. The three extra floors were not qualified for regularisation, they said.

The CMDA `strategically' demolished portions of the fourth, fifth and sixth floors of the building. The building owner, A. L. Sukumar, said he approached the CMDA last week to regularise the building, but it refused his application. The building was completed up to the fifth floor by then and work was continuing on the sixth floor, he said.
